Animal Welfare Party is celebrating today after fantastic results in the May 5th elections.

Standing for the first time in Scotland and Northern Ireland and also for the first time in the London-wide Assembly elections, AWP is delighted with the share of the vote received.

The first results to be announced yesterday morning were for Glasgow Region, where AWP’s list candidates, Barry Quinn and Dr Andrew Orr received 1819 votes / 0.7%.

As 2015 draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect upon some of the highlights in the animal welfare politics movement over the last 12 months.

In Australia, Animal Justice Party won their first ever seat and Mark Pearson, former Executive Director of NSW Animal Liberation, took his place as a dedicated representative for animals in the New South Wales Upper House.

An estimated 129.6 million euros per year in subsidies are currently spent on rearing bulls for bullfighting. Animal Welfare Party finds very little to celebrate in today’s release by the Home Office of statistics showing an apparent ‘drop’ in the number of animal experiments performed in the UK in 2014.

Animal Welfare Party supporters took the streets of Tower Hamlets on Sunday aboard the party’s Mayoral Election Battle Bus – led by AWP candidate for Mayor, Vanessa Hudson.

Around 20 supporters, some in animal costumes, some in the party’s distinctive ‘A’ t-shirts boarded the bus for a three and a half hour tour across the borough.

A running club is thought to be the first in history to have four current and former members standing as candidates in a UK General Election.

Animal Welfare Party is set to host an ‘Animal Friendly Easter’ Fundraising Dinner at The Coach & Horses, Soho on Wednesday 1st April.
