World’s biggest Vegan Knickerbocker Glory created in London’s Trafalgar Square

A super-size vegan knickerbocker glory was created in London’s Trafalgar Square on Saturday (16th November).

The UK’s Animal Welfare Party created what is believed to be the world’s largest vegan iced dessert as part of celebrations for World Vegan Month.

Wearing stilts, vegan Chef Tony Bishop Weston and Animal Welfare Party volunteers helped to create the knickerbocker glory using a super-size sundae glass and ingredients such as chocolate, raspberry and vanilla vegan ice cream, custard, chocolate, jelly and bananas.

Into the dessert went 150 bananas, 30kg home made soy ice cream, 6kg Swedish Glace dairy free ice cream, 10kg raspberry and strawberry vegan jelly, 3kg of frozen berries, 10kg Oatmilk fudge custard, 5.5kg Jordan’s Granola, 10kg soy cream, 42 plums, 2 bottles of strawberry syrup and 200gm dairy free chocolate shreds and drops.

Once created, the first to taste the mammoth dessert was 7 year old Sally Homan of Finsbury Park. Over 200 samples were then handed out to curious members of the public.

Leader of the Animal Welfare Party, Vanessa Hudson says “We wanted to help dispel the  notion that plant-based diets are about denial and misery. In reality plant-based diets can be creative and fun and I think we’ve succeeded in demonstrating that today. What better symbol of fun than a knickerbocker glory? If we want to leave the planet in a healthy state for our kids and grand-kids, we need to think much more creatively about how we feed ourselves and that involves making a shift towards eating more plant-based foods.”

The Animal Welfare Party is standing in the constituency of London in the May 2014 EU elections and has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. Those who wish to support the party’s election efforts are encouraged to visit: igg.me/at/animalwelfareparty

6.Environmental benefits of plant-based diets

A 2010 UN report concluded that a global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change.

The report from United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) international panel of sustainable resource management concluded that, as the world population surges towards a predicted 9.1 billion people by 2050, western tastes for diets rich in meat and dairy products are unsustainable.

It read: “Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products. Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat. A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products.”

Professor Edgar Hertwich, the lead author of the report, said: “Animal products cause more damage than [producing] construction minerals such as sand or cement, plastics or metals. Biomass and crops for animals are as damaging as [burning] fossil fuels.”

  • None of the main parties have any pledges to help animal abuse. You need to point this out so voters like myself can vote for the animals. Why can’t you also discuss other issues otherwise your party will remain small like the Green party. As you have vegans in your party you can gradually educate public cow milk not healthy for them etc.I did join the Labour Party during hunting ban, public do vote for the animals you can tell the main parties they have lost votes simply because they thought animal abuse was not important enough ti include in their pledges. I have heard Milliband is not at all interested in animal welfare. Please talk about religious slaughter
