Mike Kelson is the Animal Welfare Party Candidate for Lavender Fields ward in Merton, London

Mike is an actor and entertainer and keen amateur sportsman. “I’ve long cared passionately about creating a fairer world, not only for people but for animals and nature too.” says Mike. “I’ve campaigned for greater animal protections since I was a child and, later on, on local community issues. If elected as a councillor, I would be determined to be the strong voice needed for people, animals and the environment.”
Mike’s priorities include:
- Protecting and promoting local biodiversity and wildlife and opposing inappropriate development
- Providing additional waste bins and tackling anti social behaviour such as fly tipping & dog waste dumping
- Championing the area’s beautiful rivers & water courses and protecting against pollution
- Advocating for plant-based food and drink options to be served in public settings, including schools & council-catered events – and for the Plant Based Treaty to be endorsed
- Ensuring adequate lighting of foot and cycle paths to increase community safety and confidence
- Encouraging ethical and environmentally friendly businesses to the area
- Promoting greater awareness of the local food surplus distribution scheme to further eliminate waste
- Opposing speciesism in all forms, discouraging the use of words such as ‘pests’ and ‘vermin’ and cruel practices such as glue-trapping
- Promoting inclusivity and community cohesion
