Gavin Ridley

Gavin Ridley is the Animal Welfare Party Candidate for Branksome West & Penn Hill ward on the new Poole Town Council

Gavin is a teacher and academic in the field of animal welfare.

“I’m standing for election because I care deeply about our local community and the kind of future we are building together”, says Gavin. “Having worked in human rights, I have long been committed to fairness, compassion, and the protection of all living beings. That passion extends to animal welfare and the environment, which I believe should be reflected more strongly in local decision-making.”

Gavin is a strong advocate for science-led politics believing that, too often, decisions are shaped by short-term pressures, misinformation, or political spin. “I believe we need a more thoughtful approach—one that is grounded in evidence, guided by expertise, and focused on long-term wellbeing for people, animals, and our shared environment.” says Gavin. “ At a local level, I want to help create a more inclusive and connected community, where people feel heard and supported rather than divided. Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is not just where I live—it is a place I feel genuinely part of, and that has shaped who I am. If elected, I will work to represent residents with integrity, listen carefully to local concerns, and support practical, positive improvements across our community.”

Gavin’s priorities include:

  • Protecting green spaces & habitats and boosting biodiversity while pushing back on environmentally destructive development, pesticide and plastic use
  • Supporting responsible companion animal care, improving dog-friendly spaces & promoting a culture of respect for all animals
  • Encouraging local food-growing projects to promote healthier, more sustainable lifestyles
  • Creating more opportunities for inclusive and environmentally responsible community events & activities
  • Ensuring plant-based diets are promoted & plant-based options offered at council-catered events
  • Improving public spaces for all so that they’re welcoming, accessible, safe and clean
  • Listening to & acting on local concerns by holding regular drop-in sessions so residents can shape decisions and hold the council accountable
