London: UK’s Animal Welfare Party perform celebratory conga dance outside Parliament to kick off 2014, the year the party predicts history will be made for animals

Today, New Year’s Day, the Animal Welfare Party performed a celebratory conga dance outside Parliament to usher in 2014, the year the party predicts history will be made for animals when dedicated representatives are returned to the EU Parliament for the first time ever.

Despite heavy rain and winds and much to the amusement of New Year’s Day tourists, supporters joined party leader, Vanessa Hudson in the conga dance around Parliament Square, wearing animal masks, party hats and carrying pink balloons.

The party is one of 5 European animal protection parties contesting the May 2014 EU Parliament elections and has London as its target constituency.

The party estimates it needs around 140,000 votes from Londoners in order to win a seat, which roughly equates to just one third of the vegetarian members of the capital’s electorate.

Prospective candidate for London and Party Leader, Vanessa Hudson said: “Time has come for animals to have dedicated representatives in the EU Parliament. Only that way can their needs and interests begin to be properly protected. We’re very excited that there are now 5 European animal parties contesting the EU elections. This has become a Pan-European campaign and a moment in history as significant as any in the history of human and women’s rights. Speciesism, as ugly as racism and sexism, has most definitely had its day – and that’s why we’re celebrating today.”
